Fun Ways to Reward Reading and Ignite a Lifelong Love for Books in Kids
Celebrate Reading Milestones
One of the most exciting ways to reward reading is by celebrating milestones!
i have a chart where my kids can track the books they've read and set goals for them to achieve. We use circles, in groups of ten. For my daughter each circle represents 5 chapters. And for my son, a beginning reader who hates to read, he will get a full circle for every book he reads.
When they finish a certain number of books, I surprise them with a small reward—a toy, a new book series, or even a trip to their favorite ice cream shop. This not only motivates them but also helps them realize how rewarding reading can be!
Incorporate Reading into Fun Activities
i Make reading a central part of our family's fun activities!
I tell the kids there is a movie we must watch, but we have to read the book first! This encourages them to dive into the story, and by rewarding them with a fun movie experience, they will associate reading with a delightful family activity.
it's a win-win!
Turn Reading into a Social Event
when the kids were younger, we had a book worm that grew longer and longer every time we read a book. we had it taped to our living room wall (yes veryyyyyy tacky), and we wrote the title of the book we read on a circle and the circles formed the body and it quickly consumed every wall in the living room. it was a topic of conversation anytime we had guests over.
As my kids got older and the worm wasn't much fun anymore i decided to reward their reading which makes my heart full and i enjoy rewarding positive habits!
These are just a few cheerful ways to reward reading and promote a love for books in children. The key is to make reading an enjoyable and celebrated activity. By integrating rewards and fun activities around books, children are more likely to see reading not just as a task, but as an adventure filled with exploration and excitement. So, let’s embark on this joyful journey of reading together and help our kids develop a lifelong passion for literature!
