Why I Chose Homeschooling: A Journey of Discovery
HOMESCHOOL

our Homeschooling Journey Begins
Hey there! I’m excited to share my story about why I decided to start homeschooling and what it has been like since we embarked on this incredible journey. It all began with a restless desire for change. At the time I had two kids in the public school system, and one baby about to head to daycare.
After 12+ years of working full time in the healthcare field, COVID and having some issues with the daycare facility that I had my oldest son in (Pre-K), I needed to re-evaluate my long-term goals for myself, my husband and our family. I kept feeling a slight tug to homeschool but always shut it down because "who wants unsocialized kids" or "no way can we afford to live on one income".
I decided to listen to that tug one evening and for many weeks after that I sat and read everything I could about how, when, why and where to homeschool. I approached my husband about the idea of us homeschooling and surprisingly he was very open to it. He heard me out; he listened to everything I had researched, my concerns etc...
That same week's end, a movie was going to be in a local theatre for 3 days only! (PERFECT TIMING RIGHTTTTT!!!!) We bought tickets and went. IT WAS A NO BRAINER. This movie changed our minds, solidified our decision and not once have we thought about looking back. (LOL wondering what the movie was? The Homeschool Awakening with Kirk Cameron!)
Lets just say, we walked out of that movie theatre with a whole new outlook for our kids and generations to come!
Why Homeschooling?
Initially, the thought of homeschooling was daunting. However, after researching, I realized it could provide the flexibility and personalized education that I wanted my kids to have. The more I looked into it, the more I fell in love with the idea of having my kids home with me. I wanted my children to learn at their own pace and explore subjects that truly ignited their curiosity.
The Reality of Homeschooling
Fast forward to today, and I can confidently say that homeschooling has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Each day is filled with new adventures and opportunities for learning. We’ve embraced subjects beyond the core curriculum, exploring arts, poetry, and building good habits. The bond we’ve built through our shared experiences is irreplaceable!
Of course, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing! There are days when motivation wanes, and it feels like I’m more of a referee than a teacher. But these challenges have taught us resilience. We’ve learned to adapt and grow together, and every day brings a new lesson—sometimes in math and sometimes in patience!
One of the greatest rewards has been witnessing my children's growth. They’ve become more independent thinkers and more confident in expressing their ideas. It’s fascinating to watch their interests evolve; from whittling to fort building, they pursue what excites them, and I’m blessed to be able to witness it and learn along the way.
Homeschooling has not only affected my children's education but has also transformed me as a parent and educator. I’ve had to step out of my comfort zone, learn new things myself, and embrace a more playful approach to teaching (HA! Ever heard of game schooling?!). This experience has allowed me to rediscover the joy of learning alongside my kids, fostering a love for knowledge in all of us. Along the way, I've been able to fill in my own learning gaps, and AH HA Moments.
In conclusion, my decision to start homeschooling has shaped our family dynamic in the most beautiful ways. We’ve grown closer and enriched our lives through shared educational experiences. Each challenge has become an opportunity for growth, proving that homeschooling is not merely about academics. It’s about creating lifelong learners and, more importantly, nurturing a love for learning that will stay with them for years to come.
Thanks for joining me on this journey! I can't wait to share more of our adventures as we continue to explore the world through homeschooling.
